Typhoon Wipha leaves HK

The Hong Kong Observatory downgraded the storm signal from No. 8 to No. 3, as Typhoon Wipha moved away from the city this evening.

The No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal, issued at 4.10 this afternoon was replaced by the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 at 7.40pm.

The Hospital Authority said that 33 people received medical treatment at public hospitals due to typhoon-related injuries.

During the storm, the Government’s 1823 Call Centre received 286 reports of fallen trees and the Fire Services Department received 425 reports, while the Drainage Services Department received seven flooding cases.

Meanwhile, the Home Affairs Department opened 34 temporary shelters at which 277 people sought refuge.

Correctional officers stop persons in custody attempting escape

​Correctional officers stopped two male persons in custody attempting escape at Hei Ling Chau Addiction Treatment Centre today (July 20).

At 3.45pm today, two male persons in custody, aged 43 and 56, suddenly dashed out of the dayroom in an attempt to escape while the gate was being unlocked by a correctional officer. Officers at the scene immediately gave chase and called for reinforcement. Both persons in custody concerned were swiftly subdued by officers. During the incident, one of the persons in custody sustained injuries to his arm and legs, while the other sustained injuries to his knees. They did not need to be sent to a public hospital after receiving medical examination and treatment at the institution hospital.

The Correctional Services Department has referred the case to the Police for investigation.

The two persons in custody were sentenced to undergo drug treatment at the institution for the offences of possession of a dangerous drug and ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of child or young person in July 2025 and May 2025 respectively.

Resumption of pilotage service delayed

     The Marine Department has received notification from the Hong Kong Pilots Association Limited that due to deteriorating weather conditions, resumption of the pilotage service is delayed until 11.30pm today (July 20). Shipowners, agents, masters and other port users are advised to pay attention.
 

Reopening of Lei Yue Mun Sports Centre

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (July 20) that Lei Yue Mun Sports Centre in Kwun Tong District will be reopened at 9pm today.

The sport centre was temporarily closed earlier on for use as a temporary shelter operated by respective District Offices of the Home Affairs Department.
