Film Archive to present “75 Years of Cinematic Glamour – An Exhibition of Sil-Metropole Film Stills and Posters”
Since 1950, Sil-Metropole and its three predecessors, Great Wall Movie Enterprises Ltd (Great Wall), Feng Huang Motion Picture Co (Feng Huang) and Sun Luen Film Co (Sun Luen), have produced countless beloved classic films for 75 years and have held a pivotal role in the Hong Kong film industry. The unique cinematic styles and the charisma of film stars in Sil-Metropole productions from different eras are showcased from various perspectives in the five thematic zones of the exhibition.
Precious film stills and posters released from the founding of the three predecessor film companies until the 1970s and 1980s are showcased at the zone “The Works of Great Wall, Feng Huang and Sun Luen” in five categories: Reflecting Reality, Evocations of the Past, Literary Adaptations, Splendid Scenery and Martial Arts Revitalised. The posters and film stills include those from “So Siu Siu” (1962), one of the earliest Hong Kong films filmed on location on the Mainland; “The Golden Eagle” (1964), the first film shot on location in Inner Mongolia, capturing the region’s majestic wilderness; and “The Shaolin Temple” (1982), featuring a cast of renowned martial arts masters from the Mainland.
Great Wall, Feng Huang and Sun Luen merged in 1982 to form Sil-Metropole to uphold the legacy and break new ground while producing works that remain relevant to the times. The zone “Sil-Metropole: Bridging the Past and the Future” features posters and stills of Sil-Metropole films after the merger. These include the Korean release poster and film still of “The Romance of Book & Sword” (1987), an adaptation from Jin Yong’s classic martial arts novel; and a poster, drawn by illustrator Yuen Tai-yung, of the film “Cageman” (1992), winner of four awards at the 12th Hong Kong Film Awards.
In the early 1950s, painter Wong Kum moved to Hong Kong, where he began his career as a leading figure in the field of creating large advertising billboards outside cinemas. He also designed film posters, producing a prolific body of work for Great Wall, Feng Huang and Sun Luen. His precious promotional paintings and artworks are displayed in the zone “The Art of Wong Kum”, including a poster rendering the key characters of “Chu Yuan” (1977) in watercolour to evoke a sense of solemn and tragic grandeur, an original artwork and film stills poster of “The Enigmatic Case” (1980) with abstract composition and a heightened sense of mystery; and an original art work and film still poster of “The Drummer” (1983), which depicts youthful aspirations with a dazzling rainbow.
Certain specially selected authentic film promotional materials are displayed in a showcase. These include a brochure of “The Three Loves” (1956) starring renowned dancer Mao Mei; an issue of the magazine “The Great Wall Pictorial”, featuring sketch portraits of characters from “Aren’t the Kids Lovely?” (1953) by renowned artist Huang Yongyu; a New Year greeting card promoting the Yue opera film “My Darling Princess” (1964), starring actress Hsia Moon as a wilful princess; and a handbill printed by a cinema in Southeast Asia to promote the local release of the film “It So Happens to a Woman” (1955), with Cantonese opera virtuoso Hung Sin Nui in her first lead role in a Mandarin film.
Trailers of 23 films from 1958 to 1992 will be shown at the zone “Trailer Showcase” for viewers to appreciate how trailers attract ticket buyers by spotlighting the best parts of the films. In addition, visitors can also catch a glimpse of film stars from different eras through these trailers, including Hsia Moon and Fu Che in “The Eternal Love” (1960), Pak Yan and Chow Chung in “So Siu Siu”, Nina Paw and Henry Fong in “White Haired Devil Lady” (1980), and more.
In the zone “Oral History: Film Veterans on Sil-Metropole”, three video highlights of interviews by the HKFA of filmmakers affiliated with Sil-Metropole, sharing their memories of the past and their insights, will be screened. The filmmakers include one of Sun Luen’s founders, Lo Duen; directors Bow Fong and Hu Siao-fung; actors Hsia Moon, Pak Yan, Nina Paw, Peter Cheng and Hui So-ying, among others. An interview with painter Wong Kum will also be screened at the zone.
The exhibition also features two installations for taking pictures. Visitors can take their pictures with stills of classic films to become part of the cinematic world and at a feature wall with front covers of film brochures from the past.
Free screenings of selected Sil-Metropole productions and two seminars will be held during the exhibition period. Details of the screenings and seminars will be announced on the HKFA website (www.filmarchive.gov.hk

President Lai addresses 11th Taiwan-Japan Exchange Summit in Kamakura via video
Source: Republic of China Taiwan
On the afternoon of November 4, President Lai Ching-te addressed the 11th Taiwan-Japan Exchange Summit in Kamakura via video. The president expressed hope of continuing to deepen the partnership between the two countries. He also congratulated Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Takaichi Sanae on her decisive election as Japan’s 104th prime minister, wishing her success in governance and continued prosperity for Japan. He expressed hope that Taiwan and Japan can continue to strengthen economic and security resilience, jointly uphold the values of freedom and democracy, and work together for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
A translation of President Lai’s remarks follows:
This year marks the 11th Taiwan-Japan Exchange Summit. I am very pleased to be able to address our good friends attending the event. I also hope to take this opportunity, on behalf of the people of Taiwan, to congratulate LDP President Takaichi on her decisive election as Japan’s 104th prime minister. I wish her success in governance and continued prosperity for Japan.
The first Taiwan-Japan Exchange Summit was convened in Kanazawa 10 years ago, gradually building a bridge of friendship between Taiwan and Japan. I am honored to have participated in this journey, in various capacities and alongside many long-time friends. As the summit enters its next decade, I am glad to see many new friends joining us in promoting the development of Taiwan-Japan relations.
Last year, the summit was held in Taiwan’s historic city of Tainan. This year, it is being hosted by Kamakura, another historic city, symbolizing a passing of the baton and making the bonds of our friendship even deeper and closer. I would like to take this opportunity to especially thank the Kanagawa Prefectural Assembly and the Kamakura City Council for their strong support in hosting the summit in the Kanto region for the first time, setting a new milestone.
Over the past 10 years, through the support of local assemblies, members of the Taiwanese overseas community in Japan, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan, and various local offices, the Taiwan-Japan Exchange Summit has become an important platform for Taiwan to make its voice heard on the international stage and pursue greater international participation. On behalf of all the people of Taiwan, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for everyone’s efforts and support.
With the severity of today’s global situation and democratic countries facing the threat of authoritarian expansion, Taiwan will deepen its collaboration with democratic partners to build more resilient supply chains for global democracies. We also look forward to Taiwan and Japan continuing to strengthen economic and security resilience, jointly uphold the values of freedom and democracy, and work together for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
In closing, I sincerely invite all of our good friends to visit Taiwan and create more opportunities for collaboration and mutual visits through the Taiwan-Japan Exchange Summit. With the efforts of central and local governments, along with broader exchanges, I am confident that we can further strengthen Taiwan-Japan relations and jointly build a brighter future. I wish the summit great success and wish all the distinguished guests good health and happiness. Thank you.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has invited the ARC Circus Dance Theatre from Australia to make their Hong Kong debut in early December, presenting four shows of the physical theatre production “A Bee Story” as part of this year’s “Cheers!” Series. This family-friendly production blends elements of circus arts, acrobatics, music and dance, inviting audiences of all ages to join a thrilling and hilarious journey about bees moving to a new home, while conveying a message on environmental conservation. There are limited tickets left for the performances. Those who are interested should act quickly to secure tickets.
Inspired by Australia’s rich biodiversity and the pressing realities of climate change, “A Bee Story” highlights themes of friendship, sustainability, and teamwork. It tells the story of Queen Bee and Worker Bee whose hive is destroyed by a bushfire, sending them on a journey to rebuild their home. Through a series of comical and thrilling incidents, the bees demonstrate their pollen-collecting prowess, honey-making feats and “super-bee” strength, creating an immersive theatre experience filled with whimsical joy and light-hearted moments.
The roles of Worker Bee and Queen Bee will be played by the troupe’s member Sam Ellis and Taijla Morrow respectively. The duo will present the story with humorous physical movement and comedy acting, and expertly demonstrate their stunning skills such as ball juggling, unicycling, rope skipping and flute playing. The colourful costumes draw inspiration from native Australian bees, while the exquisite props reflect the natural beauty of local flora. The show has no spoken dialogue, making it accessible to children and families across cultural backgrounds, and resonate with its universal themes. The production has won the Children’s Event Weekly Award and Children’s Event Award at Australia’s Fringe World 2024.

As an official member of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, it is natural for Taiwan to engage in exchanges and interactions with other APEC member economies, both multilaterally and bilaterally, during APEC meetings. Taiwan’s APEC Leader’s Representative Lin Hsin-i engaged in exchanges and interactions with more than 10 leaders or representatives of APEC member economies during multilateral and bilateral events throughout the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and at the official dinner hosted by the Republic of Korea, including Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in his capacity as US leader’s representative.
MOFA reiterates that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent state and that neither the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is subordinate to the other. Furthermore, the PRC has never ruled Taiwan. This is an internationally accepted, objective fact and the status quo. China has no right to comment on or interfere in the sovereign actions of other nations. Its criticism of normal interactions between Taiwan and Japan based on its so-called “one China principle” is a grave violation of the core principle of the equal participation of all APEC member economies.
Taiwan and Japan share such fundamental and universal values as freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law and consider one another important partners and dear friends. Moving forward, Taiwan will continue to deepen cooperation with Japan based on their cordial ties so as to jointly safeguard peace, stability, and prosperity throughout the Indo-Pacific.

Japanese Minister of Defense Shinjiro Koizumi attended the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) in Malaysia and met for the first time with Chinese Minister of Defense Dong Jun on November 1. During the Japan-China defense ministerial meeting, Minister Koizumi emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung welcomes these statements and expresses his appreciation.
During the meeting, Minister Koizumi noted that security remained the most difficult aspect of Japan-China relations. He expressed serious concerns over China’s frequent and varied military activities in the East China Sea and the Pacific, as well as China’s increasing military maneuvers—including those conducted in cooperation with Russia—in the airspace and waters around Japan.
The rise of authoritarian expansionism poses a constant challenge to the rules-based international order and has heightened tensions worldwide. Cross-strait peace and stability are inextricably linked to global prosperity and security and are in the common interest of the global community.
Taiwan is committed to steadily bolstering its self-defense capabilities and whole-of-society defense resilience, in addition to working hand in hand with democratic partners to advance peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held bilateral talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on October 31 during her trip to the Republic of Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. This marked her first meeting with the Chinese leader since she took office as prime minister.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Takaichi emphasized the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait to Japan and the international community. She also expressed deep concern about the situation in the East China Sea and the intensification of Chinese military activities near Japan, demanding that China properly address these issues.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung welcomes and affirms the Japanese government’s pertinent statements to the Chinese side conveying its continued high regard for Taiwan Strait security.
In recent years, Japan has on many occasions emphasized its deep concern over the security of the Taiwan Strait and the region during interactions with China, including the Japan-China leaders’ meeting at the APEC summit in November and the Japan-China foreign ministers’ meeting in Beijing in December in 2024, as well as the Japan-China foreign ministers’ meeting in Tokyo in March and the Japan-China foreign ministers’ meeting during the ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in July in 2025. This demonstrates Japan’s firm support for peace across the Taiwan Strait.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the concrete actions that the international community continues to take to safeguard security across the Taiwan Strait. Looking ahead, Taiwan will further enhance its self-defense capabilities, build whole-of-society defense resilience, and work closely with friendly countries and allies to jointly ensure the freedom, openness, peace, and prosperity of Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region.
