MOFA response to statements by China’s Foreign Ministry concerning Taiwan-US tariff consensus

January 16, 2026

At a regular press conference on January 16, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its firm opposition to the consensus reached between Taiwan and the United States on trade tariffs and related details.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) reiterates that the ROC (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country, that its sovereignty belongs to the people of Taiwan, and that the People’s Republic of China has never governed Taiwan. These are objective facts and the internationally recognized status quo. China has no right to comment on or interfere in the sovereign actions of other nations. China’s remarks underscore its hegemonic mindset and how, as a troublemaker, it attempts to unilaterally change the international order.

MOFA is pleased that Taiwan’s negotiation team, led by Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun and Minister without Portfolio Yang Jen-ni, successfully reached a consensus with the United States and concluded talks on trade tariffs and related details. On the basis of this foundation and under the leadership of President Lai Ching-te and the Executive Yuan, MOFA will continue to implement its core strategy of integrated diplomacy, working with relevant ministries to promote economic diplomacy and expand cooperation with the private sector. By encouraging large businesses to lead smaller ones, combining tangible and intangible assets, furthering public-private collaboration, and advancing foreign engagement through domestic business models, MOFA is building an economic and trade joint fleet with the United States and continuing to steadily foster a comprehensive economic and technological bilateral partnership.

MOFA response to French President Macron’s remarks commending Taiwan on combating disinformation

November 22, 2025The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) notes that during a November 19 event in Arras, France, on the topic of challenges that social networks and algorithms pose to democracies, French President Emmanuel Macron praised Taiwan for its achievements in combating disinformation. President Macron said that democratic Taiwan, which neighbored an undemocratic giant bearing it ill will, had put systems in place to counter large-scale information warfare from China. He emphasized that Taiwan’s methods were worthy of emulation by France.MOFA appreciates President Macron’s recognition of Taiwan’s measures to counter disinformation. Disinformation and foreign interference are challenges that all democracies worldwide face. Having long dealt with the threat of authoritarian expansionism and information warfare, Taiwan has gradually built social resilience and transparency mechanisms. Its experience can serve as reference for international partners.MOFA emphasizes that Taiwan is willing to continue collaborating with France and other like-minded countries to share strategies for countering information manipulation, jointly enhancing democratic resilience, combating disinformation, and upholding the values of freedom and democracy as well as the rules-based international order.

MOFA strongly refutes false and malicious claims by China’s Foreign Ministry regarding Taiwan’s sovereignty and Paraguayan President Peña

May 14, 2026  No. 207  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) condemns in the strongest possible terms and solemnly refutes the malicious statements made by China’s Foreign Ministry at a press conference on May 12. By falsely claiming that Taiwan was part of China and that Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was a pawn of “Taiwan independence separatist forces,” China’s Foreign Ministry attempted to undermine the close and long-standing diplomatic relations between Taiwan and Paraguay.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country, and neither it nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other. These are internationally recognized facts and the objective status quo across the Taiwan Strait. China has no right to interfere in Taiwan’s diplomatic relations. MOFA once again extends its sincere appreciation to Paraguayan President Peña for his continued support of Taiwan-Paraguay diplomatic ties and for his staunch advocacy of Taiwan in the international arena.

Interactions between countries based on the principles of parity and mutual respect for sovereignty are the consensus and norm in the international community. Taiwan has the right to engage with all nations, and Paraguay’s sovereignty in making foreign policy decisions must be respected. China’s malicious remarks slandering Paraguayan President Peña only serve to make the world more aware of its efforts to undermine the international order through hegemonic behavior. MOFA calls on other nations to unite in denouncing China’s actions.

Taiwan and Paraguay have maintained solid and enduring diplomatic relations for 69 years. President Peña’s state visit to Taiwan this month yielded fruitful results, and several joint cooperation agreements were signed. Moving forward, MOFA will steadily promote a variety of Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project initiatives under the policy of integrated diplomacy, working with Paraguay for the development of both countries and the well-being of both peoples. Taiwan and Paraguay will continue to jointly counter authoritarian expansionism, safeguard democratic values, and uphold regional peace, stability, and prosperity. (E)

Foreign Minister Lin attends celebratory events in Eswatini, witnesses ICC opening

Source: Republic of China Taiwan

April 26, 2026  No.160  On April 25, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung, acting as presidential envoy, attended celebrations in Eswatini to mark the 40th anniversary of the accession of King Mswati III, the king’s 58th birthday, and the 58th anniversary of Eswatini’s independence. A highlight of the events was the opening of the International Convention Centre (ICC), a partnership project between Taiwan and Eswatini.

Minister Lin conveyed sincere congratulations to the king on behalf of the government of Taiwan, and President Lai Ching-te delivered congratulatory remarks in a prerecorded video played at the venue. Minister Lin, heads of state and representatives of various African countries, members of the Eswatini royal family, and other prominent political figures jointly witnessed the mutually supportive, rock-solid, and genuine friendship between Taiwan and Eswatini.

In his video address, President Lai said that he wished he was in Eswatini to extend the best wishes of the people of Taiwan, adding that it was a great honor to represent them in commemorating the king’s Ruby Jubilee and celebrating the historic triple milestone of 58s—the king’s 58th birthday, the 58th anniversary of Eswatini’s independence, and 58 years of diplomatic relations between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Eswatini. He noted that the special occasion was a national celebration in Eswatini and a powerful symbol of the staunch partnership between the two countries.

President Lai stated that, under the king’s leadership over the past 40 years, Eswatini had shone like a jewel of Africa due to its tremendous progress in the areas of infrastructure, social welfare, health care, and regional stability. He said that Eswatini’s achievements in economic and social development highlighted the outcomes of bilateral efforts to foster mutual prosperity, showing the world that sincere friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation could forge a brighter future for the people of both nations.

President Lai thanked the king and the government of Eswatini for staunchly supporting Taiwan’s international participation and reiterated that the ROC (Taiwan) was a sovereign country that belonged to the world. He added that Taiwan’s 23 million people had the right to engage with the international community and that the greater the external pressure that Taiwan faced, the more courage and resolve it would have to move forward.

Virtue never stands alone—it always has neighbors. Taiwan is especially grateful to its diplomatic allies; the European Union; the United States; Japan; friends in Central and South America, Oceania, Africa, and other regions; and the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China and other transnational organizations for their timely support and assistance. With strong backing from diplomatic allies and partner countries, Minister Lin’s delegation was able to overcome challenges and successfully attend the celebrations, despite facing a new form of suppression in China’s politicization and weaponization of flight information regions. The visit demonstrated that Taiwan-Eswatini ties are rock-solid and showed that heavy-handed tactics will not isolate democratic Taiwan.

MOFA again strongly condemns and protests China’s long-standing use of underhanded tactics to maliciously suppress Taiwan and attempt to severe its links with the international community. China’s maneuvers will do nothing to undermine Taiwan’s status as a sovereign and independent country. Its actions run counter to the global desire for democratic values and international order. The government of Taiwan reiterates that external threats of any kind will not weaken Taiwan’s determination to engage with the world. When faced with challenges, Taiwan will show even greater resolve to secure its rightful place in the international community. (E)

MOFA solemnly refutes joint statement by China and Myanmar disparaging Taiwan’s sovereignty

June 19, 2026
No. 278

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) strongly condemns the joint statement between the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar that was issued on June 17. In the statement, Myanmar expressed support for China’s efforts to achieve “national reunification” and erroneously cited United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty. Myanmar thereby appeased and condoned China in its aim to annex Taiwan by force. This seriously undermined regional peace and stability.

MOFA reiterates that neither the ROC (Taiwan) nor the PRC is subordinate to the other. Taiwan will not tolerate China’s repeated attempts to use bilateral statements to spread false narratives that seek to unilaterally change the status quo through cognitive warfare.

MOFA also expresses disappointment over the fact that since its inauguration, the new government of Myanmar has continued to show deference to China. MOFA solemnly calls on Myanmar to recognize the goodwill extended by Taiwan since the establishment of its representative office in Myanmar in 2016. In particular, Taiwan has actively engaged in cooperation with various sectors of Myanmar in such areas as the economy, medicine and public health, talent development, and humanitarian assistance.

MOFA urges the newly elected government of Myanmar to heed the will of its people, take stock of their needs, and refrain from constantly acquiescing to China’s efforts to infiltrate its society and interfere in its collaboration with Taiwan, which improves its people’s well-being.

Taiwan will continue to staunchly uphold the universal values of democracy, freedom, and human rights and work with like-minded countries to jointly defend against authoritarian systems and safeguard peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. (E)

Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung and Minister of Health and Welfare Shih Chung-liang cohosted a banquet in Geneva, Switzerland, on May 16 for World Health Assembly (WHA) delegations and permanent representatives from diplomatic allies of Taiwan. Minister Lin and Minister Shih expressed appreciation for their continued and steadfast support of Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization (WHO) and exchanged views on related issues with the guests. The two ministers engaged in lively interactions with representatives from Taiwan’s diplomatic allies during the banquet. Minister Lin said that the inaugural Taiwan Smart Medical and Health Tech Expo would be held parallel to the WHA this year to showcase Taiwan’s achievements in smart medicine, smart technologies, and humanitarian assistance. He noted that it would convey the spirit of Taiwan can help and Taiwan can lead while also aiming to deepen global health cooperation. He stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) had been actively promoting the Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project to assist allied nations in enhancing their medical and healthcare capabilities and supporting sustainable development. He added that these efforts had received widespread recognition. Furthermore, he emphasized that during the COVID-19 pandemic and in other times of international need, Taiwan had promptly provided medical supplies, humanitarian aid, and technical assistance, fully demonstrating that Taiwan was a responsible member of the international community and concretely implementing the concept of health without borders. Minister Lin reiterated that Taiwan was part of the world, that it had the right to participate in global affairs, and that its determination to actively participate in WHO, the WHA, and related mechanisms remained unchanged. He also thanked Taiwan’s diplomatic allies for their support and stressed that only through international cooperation could a healthier, more secure, and more resilient world be built. Minister Shih underscored that Taiwan continued to work with its diplomatic allies to advance medical and health care in such areas as health information, chronic disease prevention and treatment, maternal and infant health, and mental health, thereby seeking to improve global health and well-being. On behalf of the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW), he thanked the countries for supporting Taiwan’s participation in WHO and the WHA. He also sincerely invited their representatives to attend the 2026 Global Health and Welfare Forum in Taiwan to jointly create a digital health future centered on trust.Speaking at the event on behalf of Taiwan’s allies, Palau Vice President and Minister of Health and Human Services Raynold Oilouch stated that all diplomatic allies at the event shared the vision of leaving no one behind. He called on the international community to support Taiwan’s participation in global affairs to ensure Taiwan’s voice would be heard. He thanked the countries present for their support of and friendship with Taiwan at such events as the WHA. The banquet was jointly hosted by Minister Lin and Minister Shih in Geneva and attended by the 11 diplomatic allies of Taiwan that are members of WHO—namely, Belize, Eswatini, Guatemala, Haiti, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Paraguay, Tuvalu, Saint Christopher and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The event helped further Taiwan’s exchanges and cooperation in medicine and health with diplomatic allies and bolstered their support for Taiwan’s international participation. (E)

MOFA solemnly refutes claims regarding Taiwan’s international participation made in meeting between KMT and CCP leaders

April 10, 2026  No. 141  Chair of the Kuomintang (KMT) Cheng Li-wun met with General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Xi Jinping on April 10. Following the meeting, Chair Cheng stated that Taiwan had previously participated in several international organizations under the “1992 consensus.” She also said that after mutual political trust had been restored, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait should take steps to facilitate Taiwan’s return to or participation in international organizations and regional economic integration mechanisms. She further added that General Secretary Xi had responded very positively to her remark. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) solemnly reiterates that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent nation and that neither it nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other. China has no right to comment on or obstruct Taiwan’s right to participate in such international organizations as the United Nations. Taiwan’s participation in international organizations is a legitimate and legal right grounded in its sovereignty, and should not be predicated on the prior consent of or political preconditions set by China. The Beijing authorities have long maliciously misrepresented United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 on the international stage, sought to entirely block Taiwan’s participation in international affairs, and frequently threatened Taiwan’s sovereignty, as well as the lives and rights of its people, with the use of military force. In addition, China has inappropriately obtained leadership positions in several international organizations through bribery and deception, thereby unjustly excluding Taiwan’s participation and changing the rules-based international order.MOFA strongly refutes the idea that the rights of the Taiwanese people are something to be granted or withheld by the Beijing authorities as they please. China aims to deceive Taiwan’s society into following its preconditions. It uses Taiwan’s international participation as leverage while gradually eroding Taiwan’s sovereignty and diplomatic space.Taiwan is a democratic nation, and MOFA respects the fact that domestic political parties engage in cross-strait exchanges in accordance with the law. However, such interactions should not be conducted at the expense of Taiwan’s sovereignty, security, and democracy. The people of Taiwan should remain aware of the malicious nature of Beijing’s long-standing obstruction of Taiwan’s participation in international affairs, as well as its veiled attempt to circumvent the government empowered by the people of Taiwan, harm Taiwan’s sovereignty, and undermine the people’s long-term interests. In line with the policy framework of integrated diplomacy, MOFA will continue to actively promote Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations and multilateral mechanisms. MOFA also urges other countries to further support Taiwan’s participation in global endeavors based on shared values and common interests. Taiwan is dedicated to being a force for good in maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity throughout the world. Taiwan will remain unwavering in upholding this commitment regardless of any pressure it may face. (E)

Source: Republic of China Taiwan

April 10, 2026  No.138  At the invitation of the government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands—one of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies in the Pacific—Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung, serving as special envoy of President Lai Ching-te, led a trade and investment delegation to the Marshall Islands from April 7 to 9. The visit advanced the Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project in the Marshall Islands and deepened the staunch diplomatic relations between the two countries.

During his stay, Special Envoy Lin met with Marshall Islands President Hilda C. Heine, Nitijela Speaker Brenson Wase, Council of Iroij Chairman Lanny Kabua, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Kalani Kaneko, Minister of Natural Resources and Commerce Anthony Muller, and other ministers and traditional leaders. Special Envoy Lin also laid a wreath and paid his respects at the final resting place of Amata Kabua, founding father and former president of the Marshall Islands.

In addition to being hosted at a welcome banquet by President Heine, Special Envoy Lin was warmly received by cabinet officials, members of the Nitijela, and prominent figures from a wide range of sectors, underscoring the great importance that the Marshall Islands attached to the delegation.

Special Envoy Lin attended the first preparatory consultation for the Taiwan-Marshall Islands economic cooperation agreement on April 8. Both sides engaged in an in-depth exchange of views on broadening cooperation in the economy, trade, and investment. A Marshall Islands trade and investment promotion seminar was held the same day. At the seminar, Special Envoy Lin announced that Taiwan would continue to help women in the Marshall Islands create a more favorable entrepreneurial environment and strengthen women’s empowerment.

While hosting a banquet that evening, Special Envoy Lin joined Minister Kaneko in signing a letter of intent on the establishment of a Taiwan-Marshall Islands economic and resilience fund. The fund aims to establish a credit guarantee mechanism to assist local enterprises in expanding their markets.

During the trip, Special Envoy Lin and delegation members from various industries visited Pacific International, Inc. dock facilities, the state-owned Tobolar Copra Processing Authority, and islands near the capital of Majuro to explore projects with investment potential related to tourism, fisheries, and food processing.

He also presided over the commemorative plaque unveiling ceremony for the Jenrok Sports Complex, which was constructed with assistance from the Taiwan government for the Micronesian Games. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) drone diplomacy task force specially arranged for Taiwan-made drones to release celebratory ephemera from the air, symbolizing the commitment and determination of both nations to further their cooperative partnership. The atmosphere at the event was cheerful and there were enthusiastic rounds of applause.

Special Envoy Lin stated that to demonstrate Taiwan’s resolve in cultivating economic and trade ties with diplomatic allies through public-private partnerships, MOFA encourages private enterprises to invest in diplomatic allies through a strategy of larger enterprises leading smaller ones, public-private collaboration, combining tangible and intangible assets, and advancing foreign engagement through domestic business models.

Moving forward, Taiwan will accelerate the Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project in line with integrated diplomacy, facilitating development in the Marshall Islands in such domains as health care, agriculture, education, sports, clean energy, and sustainable tourism. Taiwan will also continue working with like-minded countries to safeguard regional peace and stability and bolster economic resilience across the Pacific. (E)
