The E&M I&T Day 2026, organised by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) and co-organised by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, was held at the Hong Kong Science Park today (June 9). Themed “AI+ Construction”, the event provided an interactive exchange platform for the trade to share the application, latest developments and innovative achievements of AI in the construction industry.

Delivering the opening speech, the Under Secretary for Development, Mr David Lam, said that the Government is proactively aligning with the National 15th Five-Year Plan and sparing no effort to promote the “AI+” strategy. The Development Bureau (DEVB) issued a circular in March this year mandating the adoption of selected high-impact AI applications in all suitable public works projects during the design, tendering, and construction phases. In addition, site records have been fully digitalised, and construction robots have been widely adopted in public works projects. The DEVB has also developed the “SmartEye”, a smart site management system, which enables remote real-time monitoring of project sites. The DEVB will continue to promote digitalisation and adopt AI for big data analytics to predict and reduce the risk of project delays and cost overruns.

The Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Poon Kwok-ying, said in his welcome remarks that, as the innovation facilitator of the Government, the EMSD provides support to works departments for wider adoption of AI. The EMSD strives to promote the implementation and wider adoption of innovation and technologies, connecting start-ups, universities, research institutions and government departments through the E&M InnoPortal to trial innovative solutions in real-world settings and apply successful solutions to works projects.

The E&M I&T Day 2026 brought together 26 exhibitors from Hong Kong and the Mainland, attracting over 400 participants from sectors including innovation and technology, the electrical and mechanical trade, universities and public organisations across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to attend seminars and visit the exhibition. Moreover, online live streaming recorded over 100 000 views.

DH further strengthens training on personal protective equipment in light of Ebola disease outbreak in Africa

DH further strengthens training on personal protective equipment in light of Ebola disease outbreak in Africa
At the meeting, the SCIC reviewed the latest developments of the Ebola disease outbreak, its modes of transmission and risks, as well as the infection control guidelines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other health authorities. Following an in-depth discussion, the SCIC confirmed the PPE recommendations for personnel working in different settings and performing different roles to minimise the risk of healthcare professionals and relevant staff contracting Ebola. These recommendations cover healthcare settings (including caring for hospitalised patients, patient registration or triage in hospitals or clinics) and community settings (including health screenings at boundary control points, transporting patients and close contacts, working in quarantine facilities, conducting epidemiological investigations, cleaning and disinfecting community environments, and handling waste). Meanwhile, the SCIC emphasised in its recommendations that while the correct use of PPE is important, other measures, such as timely and proper hand hygiene, thorough cleaning and disinfection of the environment, and proper waste disposal are also indispensable for the effective prevention of infection and transmission.

“Ebola disease is a severe acute viral illness. The virus is introduced into the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other body fluids of infected animals. Human-to-human transmission mainly occurs through direct contact (through broken skin or mucous membranes) with the blood, secretions, organs or other body fluids of infected persons, as well as indirect contact with environments contaminated by such body fluids. Although Ebola disease is not a respiratory illness and is not spread through the airborne route, more than 60 per cent of Ebola patients experience vomiting and diarrhoea, which may create infectious droplets. These patients may also undergo medical procedures that generate aerosols. Given the disease’s high fatality rate, additional precautionary measures are required,” said the Controller of the CHP, Dr Edwin Tsui.

He stressed that the current risk of Ebola disease is mainly confined to the outbreak areas in Africa, including the DRC and Uganda. The immediate impact on public health in Hong Kong remains low. Although no confirmed cases of Ebola have ever been recorded in Hong Kong, as an international city Hong Kong has always remained vigilant in peacetime and stayed alert constantly.

To enhance frontline personnel’s understanding of infection control and ensure their safety on the job, the Infection Control Branch (ICB) of the CHP has been providing training to various government departments and organisations since late May this year (including the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and its contractors for cleansing services, and the Civil Aid Service). The training covers the correct use of PPE, donning and doffing procedures, and related infection control principles.

In addition, the ICB of the CHP, in collaboration with the Infectious Disease Control Training Centre of the Hospital Authority, organised a forum on Ebola disease last month for healthcare professionals in both the public and private sectors, with more than 1 500 participants. The forum aimed to deepen healthcare professionals’ understanding of Ebola and response measures, including diagnosis, clinical management and infection control measures.

The CHP will continue to closely monitor the latest developments overseas and the latest recommendations of the WHO, and will take appropriate follow-up action and implement appropriate prevention and control measures according to risk assessments to safeguard public health.

The latest recommendations of the SCIC have been uploaded to the CHP websiteIssued at HKT 14:30

Source: Hong Kong Government special administrative region – 4

The Transport Department (TD) today (June 9) announced that a total of 55 440 applications have been received for 332 new private driving instructor’s (PDI) licences. As applications of all groups and quotas exceed the number of licences to be issued, a ballot will be held on June 19 to determine the order of processing the applications.

The TD has gradually sent SMS by the registered sender ID “#TDDSS” from May 14 to all applicants to acknowledge receipt and inform them of their application number. Applicants who have yet to receive such an SMS should call 2783 8890 or 2804 2600 for enquiries on or before June 17. The ballot results will be uploaded to the TD’s website (www.td.gov.hk) on the same day after the ballot on June 19. SMS under the same ID will then be sent to applicants with their ballot order number.

The TD will verify applicants’ eligibility according to the ballot sequence and inform eligible applicants by post in batches to take the driving instructor’s test, which is expected to commence as early as July. Ineligible applicants will be notified in writing. If all licences are issued, the remaining applications will not be processed. For enquiries, please call the TD’s hotline at 2804 2600.

Hospital Authority appeals to public regarding condition of patient requiring urgent heart and lung transplant

Source: Hong Kong Government special administrative region – 4

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for the Hospital Authority (HA) made the following appeal today (June 9) regarding the condition of a patient who requires an urgent heart and lung transplant.

A 13-year-old girl who requires an urgent heart and lung transplant is currently in critical condition at the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit of Hong Kong Children’s Hospital. In response to an urgent appeal from her parents, the HA appeals to members of the public to actively support organ donation and consider donating the heart and lungs of their deceased relatives to give new life to others.

Given the critical condition of the patient, in addition to proactively searching for suitable heart and lungs locally, the HA will also seek assistance from the Chinese Mainland through relevant procedures as soon as possible. When a patient willing to donate organs has passed away and no suitable patient is identified on the Chinese Mainland, the cross-boundary organ donation and matching mechanism will facilitate a transplant in Hong Kong to bring hope to a critically ill patient.

The spokesperson emphasised that when suitable heart and lungs are found, the HA will strictly follow the relevant organ transplant regulations and make an application with the authorities to ensure that all procedures comply with relevant standards and regulatory requirements. The HA will arrange the transplant operation with an aim to save the patient’s life as soon as possible.

For critically ill patients with organ failure, an organ transplant is often the only hope for extending life. When deceased patients and their families make the selfless decision to donate organs for patients in need of organ transplantation, it not only gives critically ill patients the hope of life but also eases their families’ hardships. The HA appeals to the public to extend their compassion, blessings, and care to those still fighting for their lives.

C&SD releases results of 2024/25 Household Expenditure Survey

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released today (June 9) the major results of the 2024/25 Household Expenditure Survey (HES).

It is an established practice in Hong Kong to conduct an HES once every five years to collect up-to-date information on the expenditure patterns of households. The survey results serve as an important data source for updating the expenditure weights of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and can also be used to study the consumption behaviour of households in Hong Kong.

Results of monthly survey on business situation of small and medium-sized enterprises for May 2026

Results of monthly survey on business situation of small and medium-sized enterprises for May 2026
A Government spokesman said that business sentiment amongst SMEs was largely stable in May, though remained cautious due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The current diffusion index on business receipts for SMEs improved somewhat from the preceding month, while the outlook diffusion index fell slightly. Meanwhile, the overall employment situation held steady.
The results of the survey should be interpreted with care. The survey solicits feedback from a panel sample of about 600 SMEs each month and the survey findings are thus subject to sample size constraint. Views collected from the survey refer only to those of respondents on their own companies rather than those on the respective sectors they are engaged in. Besides, in this type of opinion survey on expected business situation, the views collected in the survey are affected by the events in the community occurring around the time of enumeration, and it is difficult to establish precisely the extent to which respondents’ perception of the business situation accords with the underlying trends. For this survey, main bulk of the data were collected around the last week of the reference month.

More detailed statistics are given in the “Report on Monthly Survey on the Business Situation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises”. Users can browse and download the publication at the website of the C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/en/EIndexbySubject.html?pcode=B1080015&scode=300Issued at HKT 16:30
