Hong Kong Customs detects illegally importing animal case in sixth phase of “Pet Guardian” operation (with photo)      
     Hong Kong Customs yesterday (July 30) at Sha Tau Kok spotted a local male and a local female entering Hong Kong through the Chung Ying Street Checkpoint from the Mainland side of Chung Ying Street. Customs officers then took action and found a cat inside the backpack carried by the male. The 15-year-old male and the 45-year-old female, who was suspected to be connected with the case, were subsequently arrested.
      
     An investigation of the case is ongoing and the cat has been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up action.
      
     Being a government department specifically responsible for tackling smuggling, Customs will continue to enhance co-operation and intelligence exchanges with other law enforcement agencies, and carry out targeted anti-smuggling operations at suitable times to disrupt relevant crimes.
      
     Customs reminds the public that importing animals into Hong Kong without a valid permit is an offence.
      
     Under the Rabies Regulation, any person found guilty of illegally importing animals, carcasses or animal products is liable to a maximum fine of $50,000 and imprisonment for one year upon conviction.

Film Archive to present film screening programme “Cine Memories of the War of Resistance”  
     “Gezhi Town” tells the story of machinery factory worker Mo Dexian. To lead his family to escape the ravages of war, he takes refuge in a small mountain town called Gezhi, along with air defence officer Xiao Yan and his remaining subordinates, who have lost contact with their main regiment. When a Japanese reconnaissance unit suddenly appears, they must pool their ingenuity to resist the armed forces and protect their home together. 
 
     Directed by Chinese geophysicist and filmmaker Fang Li, who travelled the globe to gather historical materials and interview relevant individuals, “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru” reconstructs the heroic wartime story of a group of Chinese fishermen, who braved gunfire to rescue British prisoners of war after a Japanese cargo ship carrying them was sunk by American forces. Post-screening talks will be held after the documentary, with Hong Kong film researcher Dr Henry Chiu as the speaker.
 
     The screening times of the films are as follows:
 

August 29 (Saturday)     Free tickets will be distributed from August 1 (Saturday) at the HKFA information counter from 10am to 8pm on Mondays and Wednesdays to Sundays. Each person can obtain up to two tickets per screening per day, while stocks last. A limited number of walk-in tickets will also be available. Members of the public may queue at the HKFA’s 1/F Foyer 45 minutes before the screening begins. Each person can obtain one ticket on a first-come, first-served basis, while stocks last.

Fatal traffic accident in Tai Po

     Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident happened in Tai Po yesterday (July 30), in which a man died.    
 
     Police received a report at 7.38pm that a motorcycle driven by a 39-year-old man was travelling along Tolo Highway towards Sha Tin. When approaching Ha Wun Yiu, the motorcycle reportedly went out of control and fell over. A private car driven by a 54-year-old man suspectedly failed to brake in time and ran over the motorcyclist. 
 
     Sustaining multiple injuries, the motocyclist was rushed to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital in unconscious state and was certified dead at 8.52pm.

     The private car driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death and is being detained for further enquiries.

     Investigation by the Special Investigation of Traffic, New Territories North is underway.

A fire broke out at a warehouse at Luk Mei Tsuen, Mai Po at 3.38am today (July 31). The Fire Services Department is conducting a firefighting operation. 

Members of the public who are being affected by the smoke and an unusual odour carried by the wind are advised to close their doors and windows and stay calm.

Assault occasioning actual bodily harm case in Tsim Sha Tsui reclassified as murder 
     At 00:03am on July 26, Police received a report that a man was suspected of being assaulted inside a bar on Cameron Road. Police officers sped to the scene. The 32-year-old man was found lying unconscious on the ground in the bar. Sustaining serious injuries to head and chest, he was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in unconscious state.
 
     Initial investigation revealed that the 32-year old man was allegedly attacked by hands. The assailants then fled away.
 
     Police arrested four local men, two non-ethnic men and three local women, aged 24 to 46, for wounding and assisting offenders between July 26 and 29 in various districts.
 
     The 32-year-old man was certified dead at 2.54am today (July 31).
 
     Upon further investigation, Police reclassified the case as murder. A 33-year-old arrested man has been laid a holding charge with one count of murder and a 37-year-old arrested man has been laid a holding charge with one count of assisting offenders. The case will be mentioned at Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts this afternoon. Another 41-year-old arrested man has been laid a holding charge with one count of assisting offenders. The case was mentioned at the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts yesterday (July 30). Other four arrestees have been released on bail and are required to report back to Police in late August. The remaining two arrestees are being detained for further enquiries.
 
     Post-mortem examinations will be conducted later to ascertain the cause of death of the deceased.     
 
     Active investigation by the Regional Anti-triad Unit of Kowloon West is under way.

Students of PM schools need not attend school

     Please broadcast the following special announcement by the Education Bureau concerning schools, and repeat it at suitable intervals:

     As the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal is now in force, students of PM schools do not have to attend school this afternoon. Schools should keep their premises open and implement contingency measures to look after arriving students. Schools which are in session should continue until the end of school hours. They should ensure that conditions are safe before allowing students to return home.
 
     If the Hong Kong Observatory issues the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal or cancels all Rainstorm Warning Signals at or before 5pm, classes of evening schools will proceed as usual tonight unless advised otherwise.

The Government gazetted today (July 31) the proposed road works at Chi Kiang Street, Kau Pui Lung Road, Kiang Su Street, Maidstone Road, Lok Shan Road and Ma Tau Wai Road in To Kwa Wan to facilitate a redevelopment project of the Urban Renewal Authority.
