Archiving HK’s cinematic heritage

Source: Hong Kong Information Services

During the 1980s and 1990s, Hong Kong became established as a film-making powerhouse, earning the nickname “Hollywood of the East”. Over the last 25 years, the Hong Kong Film Archive has worked to collect and preserve film materials, allowing the public to savour the industry’s golden age.

Established as a database that can facilitate research on the industry, the archive has over 1.3 million items in its collection, ranging from actual films and other audiovisual materials to posters, costumes and even production companies’ financial statements.

Film Archive Assistant Curator I (Programming) Kenxi Lau remarked: “One of its most prized items is a rare colour copy of the 1960 movie ‘The Orphan’, which was Bruce Lee’s last film before he left Hong Kong for the US. The archive acquired it from a British company and brought it back to Hong Kong in 1992.”

Conservation efforts

Some materials are particularly hard to come by, and the archive is often in a race against the clock to ensure precious artefacts are not lost to the public.

Conservation Office Assistant Curator I (Conservation) Athena Wong said: “The biggest challenge is that film will degrade slowly. We need to preserve the film in cold and dry storage that slows down the degrading process, and buy time to duplicate the contents of the films.”

Ms Wong also highlighted that old video formats and projection equipment are being gradually phased out, meaning the archive has to step up the process of conversion and digitisation.

Artistic integrity

When it comes to restoration, Ms Wong explained that there can be various challenges, including a lack of reference materials.

To preserve a movie’s original look and feel from scene to scene, it is sometimes necessary to contact the people who made it – such as the director or cinematographer – to understand their thoughts and intentions at the time.

Ms Wong added that the time needed to restore a film varies depending on the damage it has sustained.

She also noted that artificial intelligence now offers some great tools to address scratches, stains and other imperfections. However, the restorers are also careful to preserve the historic soul of old films.

Interactive exhibits

Marking the archive’s silver jubilee, an exhibition is being held at its Sai Wan Ho home showcasing its work over the years to preserve the history and culture of Hong Kong cinema.

The exhibition includes screenings of film clips from the 1930s through to the 2000s, as well as interviews with donors, giving the public insights into the archive’s efforts to source film materials from around the world.

It also features actual equipment used by professional conservators, and introduces the restoration procedures and technical knowledge their work entails. Meanwhile, an interactive area with two simulation games allows visitors to experience the work of acquisition and conservation for themselves.

Aerospace science activity to be held

Source: Hong Kong Information Services

The Government announced today that an aerospace science education activity will soon be held, allowing students to watch live demonstrations of science experiments conducted in space.

Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government, the Macao SAR Government, and the China Manned Space Agency, the “Tiangong Class” activity includes an expert lecture, an in-orbit demonstration and a student question-and-answer session.

The Shenzhou-23 crew will conduct a science experiment demonstration for participating Hong Kong and Macau students at the Tiangong Space Station, engaging in a rare space-to-Earth dialogue.

The Education Bureau will arrange for primary and secondary school teachers and students to watch the live broadcast on campus on the day of the event.

The Hong Kong SAR Government noted the continuous success of China’s manned space programme. As a national-level space laboratory, the Chinese Space Station serves as a vital platform for conducting space science research while providing valuable educational resources for young people to explore cutting-edge technologies and study science.

It highlighted that the “Tiangong Class” Hong Kong and Macao Designated Session connects Earth and space to help youth in both cities gain a deeper understanding of the country’s space achievements.

The Macao SAR Government’s Education & Youth Development Bureau will organise a delegation of teachers and students to join the event in Hong Kong.

By jointly participating in this national-level science popularisation and patriotic education activity, students from both cities will deepen their connection with the nation’s scientific and technological development, ignite their passion for science, and cultivate a sense of patriotism.

On the day of the event, a live stream of the “Tiangong Class” will be available on the Information Services Department’s website, the news.gov.hk Facebook page, as well as the “A Shared Cosmic Vision for National Rejuvenation” thematic website.

In addition, Radio Television Hong Kong and other local television stations will broadcast the event live, allowing the public to witness this historic moment.

3 arrested under security law

Source: Hong Kong Information Services

The Police Force’s National Security Department arrested three people two days ago on suspicion of committing seditious acts.

Police noticed that some people had been standing outside the MTR Prince Edward Station holding bouquets and shouting seditious slogans on the evening of August 31.

The arrestees include two local men and one local woman, aged between 33 and 79. They are suspected of spreading false information and attacking the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government with lies, as well as smearing the Police Force, with the intention of inciting hatred against the Hong Kong SAR Government and law enforcement agencies.

Police arrested them for the offence of “doing an act that has a seditious intention with a seditious intention”, contravening the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance.

All arrestees have been detained for further enquiries.

Police stressed that the “831 incident” has been proven to be without factual basis, pointing out that it is a lie manipulated by people with ulterior motives to spread lies, attack the Hong Kong SAR Government and smear the Police Force, attempting to achieve their political objectives by endangering public peace.

They highlighted that the acts concerned are suspected of breaching “doing an act that has a seditious intention with a seditious intention”, which is a serious crime. Offenders shall be liable to imprisonment for seven years on first conviction.

The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Miss Rosanna Law, attended the Hong Kong Week 2026@Chengdu’s events in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, today (September 5).

In the morning, Miss Law officiated at the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong Toy Culture and IP Exhibition. Organised by the Hong Kong Brand Toy Association and sponsored by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA), the exhibition is being held at the Chengdu Global Center from today to September 13. Featuring four major zones, namely the Kung Fu Themed Zone, the Hong Kong Toy History Zone, the Hong Kong Designers Zone, and the Hong Kong Brand Toy Zone, the exhibition presents over 40 original art toy pieces by 27 Hong Kong designers/brands and creates a dialogue between the creative design cultures of Hong Kong and Chengdu, showcasing the spirit of innovative integration between the two cities.

In her address, Miss Law noted that the Hong Kong toy industry experienced rapid growth in the 1950s. Following the country’s reform and opening-up, the industry subsequently transitioned to a model centred on design, research and development, and quality control – leveraging manufacturing capabilities in the Chinese Mainland to cement the “Hong Kong Toys” brand as synonymous with premium quality. This exhibition showcases a curated selection of Hong Kong toys from different eras, with pieces of museum-grade collectible quality.

In the afternoon, Miss Law visited Eastern Suburb Memory, a renowned trendy art and cultural and creative space in Chengdu. The park is distinctive for its integration of industrial heritage with modern pop culture, preserving nostalgic elements such as old factory buildings, red-brick walls, and green-bodied trains. Eastern Suburb Memory is a diverse cultural and creative hub that brings together music, fine arts, theatre, photography, exhibitions, performances, specialty cafés, and restaurants.

Subsequently, Miss Law officiated at the opening ceremony of “Making Waves – Navigators of Hong Kong Cinema”. In her speech, she remarked that CCIDA first launched the programme in 2022, and it has since toured over 25 cities worldwide. This year, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Film Archive, the Making Waves programme has been brought to Chengdu under the theme “Sports and Passion”. A selection of nine Hong Kong sports films spanning half a century will be presented in 20 screenings, showcasing Hong Kong cinema’s achievements in themes of sportsmanship, youth growth, and self-breakthrough, while embodying the resilient and relentless spirit of Hong Kong.

CCIDA administers a number of funding schemes to support small-to-medium-scale film productions and nurture emerging film talent. The opening film, “Wakesurf Lovers”, which marks its Chinese Mainland big-screen debut, is a project funded by the Film Production Financing Scheme. Meanwhile, “Bird of Paradise” is an award-winning work from the First Feature Film Initiative, a scheme designed to fund emerging directors in bringing their debut feature films to the silver screen.

The Permanent Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ms Vivian Sum, also participated in today’s visit programme.

Miss Law will depart for Hong Kong tomorrow morning (September 6).
