The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) strongly refutes the false claims made in a recent joint statement by China and Botswana.
In the statement, released by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 13 following a meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Botswana President Duma Boko, Botswana reiterates its adherence to such absurd fallacies as the “one China principle” and to deliberate distortions regarding United Nations (UN) General Assembly Resolution 2758. MOFA strongly condemns China’s government for continuing to use bilateral meetings to rope other nations into making false statements that denigrate Taiwan’s sovereignty.
MOFA solemnly reiterates the following: the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country; neither it nor the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is subordinate to the other; the PRC has never governed Taiwan and Taiwan is in no way part of the PRC. Only Taiwan’s democratically elected government has the right to represent the people of Taiwan in the international arena, including the UN system; China and countries that follow it have no say in this matter. Taiwan will not tolerate China’s repeated attempts to use so-called “bilateral” statements to unilaterally alter the status quo through cognitive warfare.
MOFA firmly emphasizes that China’s long-standing imposition of references to the so-called “one China principle” in bilateral documents signed with other nations represents an attempt to undermine the international order. No statement or document of any kind can alter the status quo that neither side of the Taiwan Strait is subordinate to the other. MOFA advises the government of Botswana to adopt an objective and neutral stance and not to blindly submit to China’s deliberate political manipulation or disregard the potential threat that China’s actions pose to regional peace.
