NEA Commissions Studies to Strengthen Capabilities in Nuclear Safety, Regulation and Environmental Protection

27 Oct 2026

NEA has commissioned studies to deepen its technical and regulatory expertise and support Singapore’s nuclear capability-building efforts.

27 October 2026 – The National Environment Agency (NEA) has appointed consultancy firms to undertake three studies to deepen Singapore’s capabilities in nuclear safety, regulation and environmental protection.

2.           The Government has not made a decision on the deployment of nuclear energy in Singapore. The studies are part of the Government’s broader efforts to strengthen capabilities across the 19 infrastructure areas under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Milestones Approach, as Singapore prepares for the IAEA Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) Phase 1 Mission in 2027. These capability-building efforts will support the Government’s effort in studying the potential deployment of nuclear energy in Singapore.

3.           The studies commissioned by NEA will examine (i) international regulations and environmental standards of nuclear facilities; (ii) international nuclear safety standards and requirements; and (iii) the potential environmental implications of a nuclear power plant. The appointed consultancy firms are listed in Annex A.

4.           NEA Chief Executive Officer Ms Geraldine Low said, “Building strong technical and regulatory capabilities is critical in assessing the safety of nuclear energy. These studies will support NEA in strengthening our expertise in areas including nuclear safety, regulation and environmental protection, drawing on international experience and practices.”
